Sound Absorption Sheets Product Usage Guide: How Much to Use for a Project (Closet Vocal Booth, Studio Sound Proofing, Band Rehearsal Space, etc)

Choose Audimute Sound Absorption Sheets for your next sound project, whether it's a closet vocal booth or a studio sound proofing job.

Refer to the table below to determine how much product to order. Keep in mind double layering the sheets will provide best results. (Audimute does not recommend cutting the sheets. Instead, sheets can easily be folded to fit your personal size requirements.) From a 4' x 4' room (a perfect closet vocal booth) to a 12' x 14' room or larger (larger studio sound proofing), Audimute has you covered!

Although there is a great deal of science behind acoustics, for many applications sound is subjective. It is considered by many to be an art. Everyone's taste is different. For recording, some artists and sound engineers enjoy a natural room sound while others prefer to add effects to the recording later in the mixing process. Drummers tune their kits differently for various styles of music. A rock band that practices in a garage may need more acoustic treatment if they have neighbors next door versus down the street.

The style of music also comes into play. For example, hip hop, known for producing low frequency, will require thicker layers of absorption and possibly even barrier products (Peacemaker, DB-Block, Mass Loaded Vinyl, etc). Jazz, on the other hand, typically may not produce the same sound pressure levels and only require sparse coverage on the walls of the garage.

Audimute's philosophy is not to over sell sound solutions. Our recommendation is to take a phased-in approach and add product as needed to accomplish your acoustic goals. Don't hesitate to call our friendly professionals for assistance. We are a family business and glad to help.

Vocal Booth

Cover all dense surface areas with double layer of sheets (single layer may be used but will not be as effective). Keep in mind that Audimute Sound Absorption Sheets are rated for sound absorption not isolation. However, for many applications they do provide enough isolation for recording vocals when a structure (closet vocal booth, small room) already exists. Ensure your vocal booth is as airtight as possible by using weather stripping, door seal around any doors and an airtight sweep/threshold if need be for the bottom of the door.

Drums

Double layer is recommended due to the wide frequency range of the instrument coupled with high sound pressure levels. Treat right angles (corners) with bass traps. Long Audimute Sound Absorption Sheets (8' x 3') are the preferred choice as they cover the entire wall space.

Garage

Typically a two car garage will need 24 sheets. The more area covered, the better. Peacemaker, another product we manufacture for low frequency isolation, may also come into play, but only in about 25% of our garage projects, usually insulation of thin doors, drywall, floors and more.

The sheets will cancel most of the mid and high frequencies and make neighbors and house mates happy. Some lows will persist, but the nuisance frequencies will be reduced substantially.

Audimute will not only make your neighbors happy by reducing the amount of sound leaving the practice space, but there is a substantial secondary benefit... Simply put, Audimute makes for better music and musicianship. It enables musicians to hear their music in incredible detail (i.e. mistakes, buried in acoustic deflections, will now be heard clearly, etc.). It quickly puts an end to the musical "shouting contest" many bands experience as musicians increase their volume and intensity only to hear themselves. The quality of practice time will be substantially increased and enable a band to focus on musical dynamics. In a short time, there will be noticeable improvements in timing, tune, tone and instrumental technique, etc. while creating an audibly safe environment.

Window

Select enough material to cover window, preferably in double layer. Fold sheets for smaller windows if necessary.

Apartment

Our product is most often used on both sides of the wall (in other words, covering the shared wall in both rooms). You would want to cover both sides of the wall and if possible (budget allowing) in double layer.
